Big K.R.I.T. Show 6-3-2011

Big K.R.I.T. concert @ Cornerstone Pub june 3rd 2011 will go down as one of the best concerts so far in 2011 for Arkansas. I been to concerts but the energy from the crowd made this show special. All the performers did a good job. Just to name a few, Joe Average, Southwest Boaz, Tigah, The 4×4 Crew, and Bobby Boondocks.  Alot of the artist this was my first time seeing them perform. Arkansas Bo, one of my favorite artist from Arkansas did his thing. 607 and Bobby performance blew me away with their raw energy. Put it like this Im hunting for their music and I feel like I have been under a rock because this was my first time seeing 607 perform. Note to self, gotta get out to more shows because their is so much talent here in Arkansas. I will be adding more pictures and videos to this blog post so stay tuned.

Big K.R.I.T. came through and wrecked the show. I love how he came out in the Little Rock (LR fitted hat). Kandi Burruss at Bless the Mic

Monday, April 18, 2011. Kandi Burruss gave a lecture at Philander Smith College for the Bless the Mic Lecture Series. Kandi Burrsuss is a member of the platiumn R&B group Xscape. Kandi is also on the reality hit show Real Housewives of Atlanta which airs on Bravo Tv. Kandi is also a top songwriter within the music industry.
If I have one word to sum up her speaking it would be “motivation”. Kandi started out the gate speaking to the audience about never giving up your dream. One Philander Smith College student touched her heart out the gate. Kandi touched on her meeting a student named Jasmine and hearing her story. Kandi advised about how it is not easy to strive towards your dreams. One point Kandi wanted to share is you can’t be “scared” or “afraid” of success. You must understand rejection will happen but how you handle it is key. You must find the right people to work with within your field of choice. If you don’t surround yourself with the right people don’t execpt to advance in the field of your choice. It’s simple common sense. I love film so it would only be right I get involved with other filmmakers and producers. It would not be smart to work with a sports agent and I want to make films. Apples and oranges even a kid would know what to do. Now, on a serious note it would make sense to focus on your networking to advance you career. Being self-motivated is a must. Kandi touched on multiple sources of income. This is something alot of people need to take note on. It takes money to make money so if you don’t have income to invest in yourself how can you expect others to invest in you. Time and time again people want someone to invest in their dream when they don’t invest in theirselves. Kandi also made the audience think about what their dream is and how are they going about obtaining their dream. If you are a songwriter you need a demo. One lady came to the stage stating she is a songwriter and does not have a demo just the copyrights to the written lyrics. Kandi brought a valid point about songwriting. If you want someone to listen to your songwriting it needs to be put to some music. How can someone get a feel of your talent if its on paper? It will read as poetry and not come across as a song.
Kandi spoke on how she landed on the hit reality show Real Housewives of Atlanta. It was interesting how it was one of those things that just “fall into your lap” She had a friend that told the producers about her. At the time, she was in the works doing another reality show with Tiny and Toya which aired on BET. You just have to be ready. Also, Kandi discussed her clothing store tags in Atlanta she owns. She advised her store is something she owns that does not have anything to do with her music career and that shows she pratices what she preaches by having multiple sources of income.
I really enjoyed her speaking and the audience took in what she had to say. The Philander Smith College has been leading the way with their Bless the Mic: A Hip-hop President’s Lecture Series. Once again thanks to the Philander Smith College for providing a great event. President Walter M. Kimbrough and the Bless the Mic Street Team.

Short Film Cast: part II

One more scene left and it is a wrap on production. We recently shoot downtown Conway, AR for two scenes on Saturday April 9th.  We had Runthemix photography shoot behind the scene shoots that you can check out via http://www.thegpworld.com media.

In scene two of the film we get a chance to see the main character’s first girlfriend Vansea who breaks up with him at dinner.  This scene was full of bloopers due to the actors having to get into the mindset of getting dumped in public via a dinner. This scene was a rooftop night scene. The production team did a great job with the props.  The director also focused on the actors facial expressions with various close ups so the audience will get a feel of the actual breakup.

Scene 8, was a hard shoot to pull off due to the space and lighting.  After adding additional lighting we where able to shoot.  This scene is when the main character goes for his long time friend letting her know his feelings for her. Since downtown was so nice we changed the scene by taking it downtown for an outside shoot. This really brought more appeal to the movie and I think the actors would agree was a great decision. Be on the look out for the official press release of the film coming in May. The film is due out Summer 2011.

Also next week will begin taking submissions for the soundtrack that will be released this summer along with the movie.  New project coming soon. It’s a horror movie too so stay tuned for those details as well.

Melyssa Ford lecture at Philander Smith

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011. The Philander Smith College Sex Week 2011 begin with a lecture from model and actress Melyssa Ford, “Sexual Responsibility in a Hyper-Sexualized Culture”
The goal of Sex week was for Philander Smith College, located in (Little Rock, AR) to provide a forum for frank and honest dialogue among the students, faculty and staff to promote healthy behavior and good decision making with regards to sex.
The keynote speaker of the evening was model and actress Melysaa Ford. It begun with Dr. Kimbrough opening with a brief discussion about the importance of sex education along with a brief introduction of the speaker which was followed by a introduction a senior student at the college. She was greeted with hand claps and cameras. She started off with a background about hometown and how she got started by being discovered by director Little X. She advised she has been doing speaking engagements for the past six years in which she has been featured on Bet, CNN, and several shows discussing hip-hop and its affect on society.
The focus of the lecture was the increasing emphasis on sex in our society. The examples she used where on point. One example was how music videos have changed over the past decade. This was something that the audience connected with right away. One example was how the big budget videos have decreased in number. Now the quality is lower along with the budget providing more access to the market. Some of the audience remembered BET UNCUT and how it changed the way music videos where viewed by providing more adult content for its viewers.
The crowd participation was great. One of the funniest moments was when she asked the girls what guys they have a crush on and of course you had Trey Songz, Tyrese, Morris Chestnut, etc..but on girl yelled Nicki Minaj and the crowd burst with laughter..that was unexpected. I laughed myself “Wow”,lol She also turned her attention to the guys discussing “the pretty decoy” and how guys tend to become victims of unprotected sex. Throughout the lecture she would touch on topics that keep the audience engaged while still providing facts on improving their lives and making better choices regarding their sex life.
She spoke alot to the girls about taking responsibilities for their actions and building a sisterhood and not tearing each other down with by being “haters” Also, she touched on building self-esteem by letting go of the mistakes from the past. She also provided a input on how to move on with your life. I thought that was rather neat because I been to alot of lectures and not all the time does the speaker share a personal example for the audience. Melyssa Ford also has a book that she will be releasing in the near future. I will be getting a copy.
It was good for the students to have a down to earth speaker discuss such a topic in which at times is difficult for adults to rely to the younger adults. I enjoyed the lecture. The point I agreed on was the fact you have to be responsible for your actions. I am a strong believer that “True Change” starts with yourself. Society will change when people stop looking at others and look in the mirror. If you don’t like what you see do something about it, stop making excuses for your own actions.

This was my second time at the Philander Smith College and I will not let this be my last visit. I wasn’t able to drop in for the other speakers which consist of Demetria Lucas, Relationship Editor, Essence Magazine, dating expert from the VH1 series, Let’s Talk about Pep, and author and Bless the Mic: Jacque Reid, Media Personality and host, “Inside Her Story” The Tom Joyner Morning Show. I will be checking out Philander Smith College more and would also like to thank all their staff for putting together these great events.

Thank you,
Edward Block
